As the year draws to a close, I find myself navigating a swirl of contradictory emotions: a blend of relief, gratitude, and a tinge of nostalgia. It reminds me of that bittersweet moment when a close friend lands a dream job in a distant city—on one hand, you’re overjoyed for them, but on the other, you feel the sadness of impending separation. In a single breath, you hold both delight and grief, feeling everything yet nothing at once. It’s humbling how swiftly time slips through our fingers, and I’m in awe of how quickly 2024 has flown by.
I am deeply appreciative of life in all its complexity—opportunities, challenges, and blessings alike. I’ve forged meaningful friendships and depended on the unwavering support of my family throughout the year. To the friends, mentors, and loved ones who have shaped my 2024 story: thank you for being part of this journey. Your presence has influenced my life in immeasurable ways.
My start to 2024 was an uphill climb, weighed down by personal and familial issues that left me feeling uncertain. Over time, however, I committed to confronting these struggles head-on. I sought professional help, opened up to trusted friends, and—crucially—extended myself the grace to heal. Looking back, I see how transformative this inward work has been. Gradually, I noticed that I was laughing more often, experiencing genuine moments of joy. These days, I find myself smiling with a sense of freedom I haven’t felt in a long time, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
This year has seen its fair share of triumphs and failures. I realized many goals while inevitably falling short on some commitments. Still, I observe tangible growth in my personal, professional, and academic life. My greatest revelation has been learning to find life amid chaos. I once believed that “real life” would only begin after solving every problem. However, I now understand that true living happens in the midst of uncertainty. Pain, stress, and confusion will always exist, and it’s unrealistic to expect perpetual happiness. Instead, we should strive to carve out pockets of joy—heartfelt laughter, meaningful conversations, and acts of kindness—even as the world spins around us.
Amid life’s turbulence, remember to reach out to friends, family, and anyone in need. Offer your time, skills, or listening ear if you can’t give financially. Small efforts, like volunteering an hour a week or mentoring young people to seize global opportunities, can have a lasting positive impact on a community.

“I know,’ he said, breaking our embrace. ‘Inshallah, we’ll celebrate later. Right now, I’m going to run that blue kite for you,’ he said. He dropped the spool and took off running, the hem of his green chapan dragging in the snow behind him.
‘Hassan!’ I called. ‘Come back with it!’
He was already turning the street corner, his rubber boots kicking up snow. He stopped, turned. He cupped his hands around his mouth. ‘For you a thousand times over!’ he said. Then he smiled his Hassan smile and disappeared around the corner. The next time I saw him smile unabashedly like that was twenty-six years later, in a faded Polaroid photograph.”
